Classical music?

noodlesmoop asked:

Here on yahoo answers when a question is asked that form opinions about classical music and when some people say they **** classical music they insult them like crazy by saying that people that do not like classical music are stupid and does not like any thing that requires patience. I find that very ignorant because just because a certain person that does not like a certain thing does not mean that the person does not have some of the same traits of the other people have.
Yes I do not like classical music as a matter a fact I do not like most music why I am not sure but I just do not.
Why do people say these things.

I don’t know why people say these things. Some people are just cruel and selfish. Theres nothing wrong with classical music, or other types of music. Everyone is different and everybody likes different things.

OK, it’s a bit like marching into a nudist colony wearing a pinstripe suit, or attending a vegan conference in patent leather shoes with a meatcleaver dangling from your belt. :-)

It’s perfectly reasonable for you not to like music more or less full stop (as you said) and being rude to you about that would be somewhat moronic, to say the least. But when someone eats a ham sandwich (‘I **** classical music’) in a synagogue (‘a forum dedicated to classical music’) it can hardly be unexpected when that provokes a sharp reaction? The reason for it is simply human nature. Folk congregate to share like interests and will generally welcome any curious visitors with courtesy. However, mixing my metaphors wildly, the pinstripe suit can be a red rag to a bull in the aforementioned colony, and the wearer could have worked that out on fingers and toes well before. That’s probably what the sharp reactions are all about. The frills to justify that reaction (‘stupid’ ‘patience’ etc you mentioned) is just stuff and nonsense to window dress the baser emotion of not wanting to be confronted with ‘an interloper’ upsetting the apple cart in what is thought of as a ‘safe’ place. It’s not particularly attractive, but it’s very much human nature… :-/

Some people type nonsensical answers just to add points to their profile here on Yahoo Answers. Also a person’s age and how much exposure they’ve had in a certain field plays a factor.

In my opinion, songs written during the Classical era are crafted better than the songs you hear now. Back in the days, you actually had to take lessons to know the difference between the notes, learn to sing/play an instrument properly, and perform. Nowadays, anybody who has no talent can make a CD and use their popularity to get other people to buy the garbage they produced.

I like Classical music to an extent, but I also take into consideration the other songs made now and my, how time has changed!

On one hand, they are free to say that they **** classical music, but when they get into saying it’s stupid and for sissy’s, then that’s going too far.
On the other hand, people calling others who comment on classical music being stupid is also not acceptable. People have their opinions.. I dont like death metal or rock? Am i stupid? No probably not, but people might say I am.
SOME (note i used SOME) people are too selfish and ignorant. People don’t like what they like? Well forget them, they better deal with it.
That’s their mindset. Not really cool yadigg?
It really has nothing to do with classical music, everything has opposing sides.

Okay, I’ll admit it. I’m a classical music “snob”. I think its better than most other kinds of music–not that I don’t like some other kinds as well.

But my response to your particular point is that I while I don’t think that people who don’t like classical music are necessarily “stupid”, etc., neither do I think that all kinds of music are of equal value or have similar characteristics. The kind of music you like says something about you. Classical music is complex, and explores a vast range of human thoughts and emotions. That’s quite different than a gangsta rap song about your “bitches”. When we love a particular kind of music, we identify ourselves with the ideas and traditions that that music represents. A lot of those ideas and traditions are just fine. Others I find shallow and repulsive.

I read all of the answers to your question before posting mine.

I’ve been a participant, for only about a month now. But soon discovered that a vast number of the programs users, participate not to have a respectful, meaningful exchange of information, but rather to air their disgruntlement with life, whatever the form it may take.

What else can one do if continuing to utilize the program, but to try and ignore them?

With regard to the specific question at hand, it would seem to me to be more accurate to characterize someone who doesn’t care for classical music as simply being ignorant, or maybe uneducated in the finer things of life. But not stupid. That implies that they have a lower range of intelligence. Taste is not necessarily determined by ones I.Q.

More often than not, I think it is a question of exposure and nurture.

In the majority of instances – not always – one will find that a classical music lover, has parents who love classical music.

Anyhow, lets all calm down; and try to extend a little more consideration, if not just simply plain, common courtesy toward each other. I think everyone would get more out of participating then.

    A contemplative,

    Wotan

Classical music is very important in many people’s lives just as all other forms are to each person. Why would anyone criticize other’s taste.Look at it this way, do we all like the same cars, movies etc?

If I came stomping into your living room and proceeded to tell you what a moron you are, what would you do?

I thought so, now do you understand?

If said individual comes in here and comes with curiosity rather than confrontational then that is different as well, but what you characterize is normally called a troll and normally they get least a few strikes. People who come to forums and act like that deserve and desire what they get.

Of course it’s wrong to insult people for not liking classical music. I don’t think anyone (reasonable) seriously advocates insulting people on their musical tastes.

However, I don’t think it is incorrect to say that most people who don’t like classical music are unfamiliar and uneducated about classical music. The biggest complaints (it’s boring, it all sounds the same) would be ludicrous to almost anyone that has spent a fair amount of time actively listening to classical music. It doesn’t mean anyone’s stupid, it means that they haven’t spent the time trying to understand the style of music.

Yes, there is some accounting for musical taste, but most people that express blanket dislike for classical music have not bothered to listen for more than a few moments at a time. I taught a music class for adults a few years ago. Every single one of them expressed a greater enthusiasm for classical music after spending several weeks listening to and discussing various styles.

And of course, classical musicians get defensive about this because we spend our entire lives training to teach and perform these pieces. When people dismiss our entire repertoire with a blanket statement about classical music being boring (having never really listened to it), we do tend to get defensive.

Nonetheless, it’s not helpful in any way to retaliate by insulting people for their opinions. I’m just trying to explain why people get upset in that situation.

You are entitled not to like classical music.

You are entitled to SAY so. – though doing so to a classical music audience is rude.

You are entitled to your opinions.

OTHER PEOPLE are entitled to not like YOU or your opinions.

They are entitled to SAY so (though it may be rude).

Once you express criticism, you open yourself up to also being criticized. other people are as entitled to their opinions as you are to yours.
